Five years ago, the leaders of the world's nations met at the Earth Summit in Rio to set out an ambitious agenda to address the environmental, economic, and social challenges facing the international community. Earth Summit Watch is a unique citizens' initiative to monitor and encourage actions by each national government to implement the promises made in Rio and thereafter to move toward sustainable development.

More than 100 Presidents, Prime Ministers, and other top officials gathered at the United Nations in New York from June 23th - 27th - Earth Summit II - to assess the progress made since Rio.

WHAT'S NEW:
  • At Earth Summit II, the governments agreed to undertake yet another international discussion on providing safe drinking water for the world's people. Our report - Clearing the Water - suggests the need for a new approach to addressing this critical problem.
  • our review of "The Other Earth Summit II" - extracting from more than the 120 statements by top government officials in New York information on what their governments say they have done - and plan to do - to implement their Rio commitments.
